Every December 12th I remember that it was my grandmother's birthday. When I am in the United States, I make a point of purchasing a red rose in honor of her ..(and because she loved roses)
It was a lovely winter day in New England and the first beautiful and heavy snowfall began that morning. I had errands to do downtown. among them , taking many things to the local Salvation Army to donate..
I arrived at the store by the back entrance, deposited my donations and decided to enter the store to "just look around",,,there was nothing of interest. as I was leaving, I happened to glance at a very small picture frame...but continued to my car as I had no need of anything. upon arriving at the car door, I felt almost impelled to return and purchase the 99 cent picture frame !
I did so. it was quite old, not in very good shape, but with silver polish and for the price, I thought I would put a picture of one of my children in it...
I then continued on my way, going to the florist, picking up groceries and arrived at my home in the afternoon. attended to some household duties, lit the fire, and decided to sit down, enjoy the snowfall outside the window by the table, opened the Dom Perignon split and looked at my grandmother's portrait and wished her a very Happy Birthday..
(I must now go back many years in order to explain this happening...when I was a small child , my grandmother would always find 4 leaf clovers and give them to me for good luck. to this day I have never found any ! Even after I was a young bride and living in a foreign country , I would receive letters from her and enclosed would find several 4 leaf clovers !)
To
continue...after toasting my grandmother, Maude, I thought of the various
purchases I had made and began to open some packages while seated at the table.
and I came upon the small and humble little picture frame. it was held together
with old and yellowed scotch tape around the velvet backing. I began to tear it
off, and when the velvet back came off...there fell upon the table...4 -4 leaf
clovers. one for me and 3 for my children. My grandmother had not forgotten
me...It made me so very happy...
