I was living in Los Angeles in 1982 with my girlfriend Mary when she took me to meet her 72 year old father for the first time. Her dad, Bill, a life long heavy smoker was in the hospital due to complications from emphysema. Bill and I instantly got along with each other. Mary later told me her dad told her he liked me and she added that I was the only boyfriend he had met who he had immediately taken to. I was pleased. After his release from hospital, Bill came over to our small North Hollywood apartment for a friendly dinner, but we didnt meet again. He and Mary had a disagreement and we didnt see him until he fell ill about eight months later. He was back in the hospital again, but this time it was very serious and when we went to see him, he was in intensive care. He had a breathing tube in his throat and although conscious, was unable to speak or otherwise communicate. Before we left the room I went up to him, leaned over, looked in his eyes and said Well be back. He was blinking rapidly, moving his eyes and was clearly distressed, which I naturally put down to his physical condition. He died that evening before we could visit him again. A couple of days later, Mary and I went to his small retirees unit in Burbank to box up his few possessions. We were there for an hour or so, had loaded the car and were just preparing to leave when I had to use the bathroom. As soon as I went in I felt a strong presence in the small room. The air seemed suffused with brightness and my skin began to feel prickly. I left the bathroom and closed the door behind me. As I turned to face the built-in wardrobe to the left just outside the door, the energy presence I had felt in the bathroom became very intense and I was frozen to the spot. Suddenly, I felt a hand on the back of my neck pushing my head down and my attention was instantly riveted to a small and what would normally be an unnoticeable drawer near the floor. I knelt down and opened the drawer. In it was a lone object; a passbook for a bank account containing Bills life savings with Mary as a co-signatory. As he had not made a will and had not told us about the bankbook, it seems he wanted to be absolutely sure that she received the money.
I had
never had any prior thoughts or concerns about the existence of a life after
physical death, but this was very convincing. Bill not only clearly in some way
still existed, but he was able to have an effect on me in order that his intent
to help his child could be fulfilled. It was an extraordinary, undeniable and
profoundly affecting experience.
