My
mother had been in a nursing home for several years following difficulties with
normal pressure hydrocephalus and severe rheumatoid arthritis.
She was hospitalized with an infection and came to the point where she
could not eat or drink. She did not
have a living will but my sisters and I had already discussed her preferences
with her before her health declined and we knew she didn't want heroic measures
and she definitely did not want to live with a long-term feeding tube so the
decision was made to withdraw care.
She was transferred from the hospital back to the nursing home and put on
hospice care. I flew home to
Missouri from Texas to spend time with her.
She was unable to speak while I was there except for one word - a faint
'yes' when I asked her if she knew I was there. I told her several times while I
was there that I would like to have a sign from her after she died that
everything was ok. She passed away
about a week later, and 5 days later we had her funeral on what would have been
her 75th birthday. I was speaking
with one of my nieces at the funeral and she said she always remembered Granny
saying 'I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck'.
I didn't remember her saying that and it wasn't a saying I was familiar
with but it really stuck with me because it totally sounded like something my
mother would say. About a week later
I was back in Texas and was shopping at Hobby Lobby - while walking down the
aisles I saw a picture frame with the words 'I love you a bushel and a peck'.
I
was surprised but then I just chalked it up to coincidence.
A few days after that I was going up and down the aisles of a big antique
mall and I saw the saying again on a
wooden sign. A couple aisles over I
saw another sign with the words "I love you a bushel and a peck"
Finally after seeing that saying 3 times I decided that was the sign my
mother chose to send me - and it was literally a sign!
