A cousin and I have been sleeping in twin beds. Still awake we were babbling. Suddenly we heard the steps of a person mounting the stairs towards the floor of the sleeping rooms, steps of somebody who is walking on wool socks. Puzzled we pricked up our ears and stopped to talk. Recognizing the steps of my father, I whispered to my cousin: It's my father. I was certain it being him, as he had this habit, every evening before going to sleep he mounted to assure that we slept well, and, he made the tour of all sleeping rooms (four ones) and always in the same order. I was sleeping in the most remote room of the stairs. We heard the steps entering and leaving every room, but, when we heard them coming towards our room, we started to be scared. We had no desire to see a ghost, even if it was my fathers one! My cousin and me pulled the covers over our heads. The steps came closer, went first to my cousins bed and then I felt a presence at the side of my bed. He was standing between the two beds. Inwardly I said: Daddy, go away.
Although I held the covers with two hands, he lowered a corner and I felt a kiss on my forehead.
The steps left towards the door, he returned to the stairs, we heard him walking down and going towards the room where my mother slept and one of her sisters.
The next morning, our aunt seeing our astounded faces asked: What's wrong? You look as if you saw a ghost.
We told her about my fathers visit. At what she added: Me too, I heard everything and I felt his presence in the room at the side where your mother was sleeping. I felt that he leaned towards her, then, returned towards the kitchen from where he came before going to the upper floor. I wasn't sleeping, but I saw nothing despite the fact that I had my eyes wide open.
My father committed
suicide on the first of July 1972, so today this is now 42 years ago.
