Our German Shepherd mix, Conchita, had to be euthanized when her health took a serious turn for the worst during chemotherapy treatment for a mast cell tumor. She was doing fairly well when one week she became nauseated, we had to discontinue the chemotherapy and then she became very weak. She received fluids and antibiotics but got continually worse for a few days and finally we made the decision to have her put to sleep. We applied sand from a blessed mandala to her forehead and placed mantras on her body according to the traditions, and chanted a mantra for her favorable rebirth as she lay dying at the vet's office.
I still felt terrible about finally losing a 2 year struggle against various forms of cancer, both liver and mast cell, and though we gave her quality of life and many months of remission we still lost the war against cancer.
Less than two weeks later I dreamed that I saw her lying on her mat in the living room. I approached Conchita and said "Don't vanish!" because I knew she had died and what I saw was her spirit.
Mentally, Conchita said to me, "I won't vanish yet.. I have something to show you." Then a face of a black and tan dog with floppy ears was superimposed on her own. The dream ended and when I awoke I wondered, is she showing me a future dog she wants me to have or is she showing me that she used to be a black and tan dog I owned 20 years ago?
Two weeks later I went to the local animal shelter where a relative does
volunteer work to chat with her. Before she knew my boyfriend and I were
even there, she called me on my cell phone and said that a dog that looked like
a dog I used to have was at the shelter, spayed and ready to go. A volunteer
showed me the dog and she looked like the dog that Conchita had shown me in my
dream. I was not emotionally ready to adopt quite yet but I did not want to go
against an apparent desire on Conchita's part and so I adopted the new female
dog. Grazia has so far been a pretty good dog!
Was this
experience difficult to express in words?
No
Did you ONLY sense an
awareness of presence of the deceased without actually seeing, hearing, feeling
or smelling them?
No
Did you hear the
deceased or hear something associated with the deceased?
Yes
Did the
voice or sound seem to originate externally or outside of you, inside you, or
did you not hear a voice or sound, but had a sense of knowing what was
communicated?
It was telepathic and in a dream.
Did you feel a touch
or experience any physical contact from the deceased?
No
Did you see the
deceased?
Yes
She was a grown dog.
How
clearly did the deceased appear?
She appeared solid.
How much
of the deceased did you see?
I saw all of the
deceased.
Did the
deceased appear or not appear to be the age at which they died?
She appeared to be the
age she was when she died.
How
healthy did the deceased appear to be?
I did not see any
infirmities.
Did you smell a
distinct smell, scent, fragrance or odor associated with the deceased?
No
How long did the
experience last?
About twenty
seconds... it is hard to tell since I was dreaming.
Was the beginning and
end of the experience gradual or more sudden?
Sudden.
Could you sense the
emotions or mood of the deceased?
Uncertain
Did the deceased give
you information you did not previously know?
She showed me a
dog which might be a dog I had owned 20 years previously or perhaps not. Little
actual detail was shown.
How do you currently
view the reality of your experience?
Experience was probably
real
Was the
experience dream like in any way?
Yes
It was a dream and was
unusual in that I knew my dog was in spirit and was definitely communicating
something specific.
Describe in
detail your feelings/emotions during the experience:
I was a little confused
because I didn't know if the dog she was showing me was a past life of hers or
if it was a future dog for me.
Was there any
emotional healing in any way following the experience?
Yes
I was more confident
that she was doing well and that the ceremonies we did helped both of us. I
wondered if the ceremonies made it easier for her to communicate with me in my
dream. This is the first time I ever had such a clear communication from a
deceased pet animal in a dream.
What was the best and
worst part of your experience?
The best part was the
feeling that my dog Conchita was comfortable and adjusting well to Bardo and the
worst part is that the dog I now have is not her reborn. It might be another
dog of mine reborn, but it is definitely not Conchita. This dog is a grown dog.
Has your life changed
specifically as a result of your experience?
No
Did
you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?
No
Did the experience give you any spiritual understandings such as life, death,
afterlife, God, etc.?
Yes I already had some spiritual understandings.
Death Compacts
are when two or more living people promise among themselves that whoever dies
first will try to contact the other(s). Have you ever made such a
compact?
No
Did
you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience
that could be verified later?
Uncertain The day I went to the shelter on February 9 I was not intending to
adopt a dog and my relative did not know I was even there when she called me to
tell me about this black and tan dog with long ears that was ready to be
adopted. No one had expressed any interest in the dog and she had been at the
shelter for about ten days.
What emotions did you feel during the experience?
I
was still a little confused but I was very glad that my dog was able to
communicate with me in spirit.
Was
the experience witnessed or experienced by others?
No
Did
you have any sense of altered space or time?
No
Did
you have a sense of knowing, special knowledge, universal order and/or
purpose?
No
Did
you become aware of future events?
Uncertain
I
did not know that a dog matching the appearance of the face of the dog my
deceased dog was showing me would soon be available for adoption.
Did
you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience
that you did not have prior to the experience?
No
Did
you meet or see any other beings other than the deceased?
No
Did
you see a light?
No
Did
any part of your experience seem to occur in a place other than the location
described above?
No
Have you shared this experience with others?
Yes One person believed that I had an after death communication (and started
looking for a black and tan dog for me) and another said it was "weird".
Have you shared this experience formally or informally with any other researcher
or web site?
No
Were there any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect
the experience?
No
Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life,
medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?
No
Did
you ever in your life have a near-death experience, out of body experience or
other spiritual event?
Yes
Many
times I have communicated psychically with what appear to be spirits in the form
of dreams or the receiving of mental imagery or short sentence mental
communications.
Did
the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively
describe your experience?
Yes
Experience description #1:
I was asleep in my bed upstairs and my partner was sleeping downstairs, so he was not aware of the experience. It was approximately 3 am and I awoke suddenly from sleep, saying out loud, "Oh my god, there's a ghost in this room!" Then I sat up partly and saw to my right a figure of a man standing by my bed. He was about five feet nine or ten inches tall, was surrounded by small sparkles, and had light brown hair. I could not determine who he was. All I knew was that he was a relatively young man, and he had a rather sheepish or embarrassed expression on his face. I sensed the emotion of slight embarrassment, and a little surprise, on the part of this semi translucent man. He then vanished.
I thought about all this for a minute or so, and then shrugged it off as a dream and looked over at the clock. I then went back to sleep and did not think about the incident again for weeks.
A month later I received two boxes from United Parcel Service from Mississippi. They were from the radio station where a friend of mine worked. I had been worried about the friend because he had not been replying to recent email messages. The boxes contained DVDs and personal photos of my friend and an explanatory note. The note read that by the time I read this, he would be deceased. He had had a car accident and injury a year before and did not want to continue to live walking with a cane. He was leaving his effects to friends who would appreciate them.
I immediately called
his landlady, hoping against hope that maybe my friend had not gone through with
his suicide. Unfortunately, the landlady sadly related that he had shot himself
in his room. I asked her when this had happened, and she said "Around the 3rd
of September." Suddenly I recalled the vision of the young brown haired man.
It occurred to me that I had seen this vision around the time of my friend D.
S.' death.
Was this
experience difficult to express in words?
No
Did you ONLY sense
an awareness of presence of the deceased without actually seeing, hearing,
feeling or smelling them?
No
Did you hear the
deceased or hear something associated with the deceased?
No
Did you feel a
touch or experience any physical contact from the deceased?
No
Did you see the
deceased?
Yes
The vision or
apparition was of a youngish looking man, of average to tall height, wearing
clothes, and having light brown hair. "He" was semi translucent, and outlined
by tiny sparkles of light. I was not sure who he was.
How
clearly did the deceased appear?
He appeared somewhat
transparent. I could, however, make out some of his facial features and he
seemed to have a sheepish smile on his face.
How
much of the deceased did you see?
I saw all of him.
Did
the deceased appear or not appear to be the age at which they died?
If the apparition
was indeed my friend, he appeared to be about the age at which he died.
How
healthy did the deceased appear to be?
I saw no infirmities.
The apparition stood straight and I saw nothing unusual about his appearance.
Is
there any possibility what you saw was from any other source present in the
surroundings at the time of your experience?
No. The room was dark
and the only light was from two small windows that looked out onto the street.
I have a lot of bushes surrounding the yard and they tend to block out much of
the outside lights.
Did you smell a
distinct smell, scent, fragrance or odor associated with the deceased?
No
How long did the
experience last?
The entire
experience seemed to last no more than about twenty to thirty seconds.
Was the beginning
and end of the experience gradual or more sudden?
Something jolted
me awake from sleep and caused me to say loudly, "oh, my god, there's a ghost in
this room!". The apparition only was present for me to see for about ten or
fifteen seconds and then it simply vanished.
Could you sense the
emotions or mood of the deceased?
Yes
I sensed some
surprise and sheepishness or embarrassment.
Did the deceased
give you information you did not previously know?
No.
How do you
currently view the reality of your experience?
Experience was probably
real
Please explain why you view the reality of your experience as real or not
real:
For a while I wondered if I had had a dream and suddenly awoke from it, but was
not sure and am not completely sure now, but the apparition or vision by my bed
was rather unusual. I have never been jolted from sleep in quite that way
before. I was not dreaming about a man before my sudden outcry and the sudden
awakening from sleep. I cannot recall any dream I was having before the
experience.
Was
the experience dream like in any way?
No
Describe in detail
your feelings/emotions during the experience:
I was startled and I
wondered why I awoke saying those words. I then looked around me in the dark
and saw the semi translucent man and was puzzled as to who he was and why he was
there.
Was there any
emotional healing in any way following the experience?
Yes
Weeks following the
experience I found out about the death of my friend in Mississippi and I felt
terrible about it and the way he had chosen to end his life. I had always tried
to be there to encourage him when he felt down, which was not often, and I still
feel very bad about the way he died. However, it is good to think that he
sought me out afterward to see me. I have not had any dream about him or any
other apparition that appeared to be him. I want to be sure others know about
him and the good man he was. I talk about him a lot.
What was the best
and worst part of your experience?
The best part of the
experience was thinking that maybe a friend came to see me just after he passed,
possibly had tried to see other friends, and they could not see him. I wonder
if he got a little frustrated by all that, and was surprised that I could
actually see him. The worst part was thinking that he was someone I may know
but was not sure because I did not have his identity communicated to me.
Has your life
changed specifically as a result of your experience?
Uncertain
Describe:
This was my
first experience with a full bodied apparition, if indeed the vision I saw was
connected to the death of my friend, and it seemed to be connected in terms of
the gender of the apparition and the timing with my friend's suicide. I had
never seen an apparition before.
Did you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?
No
Did
the experience give you any spiritual understandings such as life, death,
afterlife, God, etc.?
Uncertain I am comforted that he is not suffering, but I still worry
about him because I don't want him to begin his next life still thinking that
suicide is an answer to problems.
Did
you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience
that could be verified later?
No
What emotions did you feel during the experience?
Because the vision or apparition simply vanished before my eyes, I did not think
anything else about it, and sat in bed for a few moments. I concluded that I
had been having a dream, then turned over and went back to sleep.
Was
the experience witnessed or experienced by others?
No
Have you shared this experience with others?
Yes Most people just shrug their shoulders and say nothing. Few venture an
opinion and usually change the subject fast. I don't think anyone was
influenced. If they were, they give no sign.
Have you shared this experience formally or informally with any other researcher
or web site?
Yes

Were there any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect
the experience?
No
Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life,
medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?
No
Did
you ever in your life have a near-death experience, out of body experience or
other spiritual event?
Yes
I
have had a number of very detailed dreams in which deceased persons talked to me
in ordinary conversations that made perfect sense. I have also been "touched"
by unseen hands at various times (while I was awake) and I think a spirit
"walked" through me once. I have been in someone's home where I felt strongly
that I was being watched while in their downstairs dining room, and I saw in
that home in my mind's eye various older persons playing board games by a
fireplace upstairs. I learned later that night that the home had at one time
been a retirement home. This was something that I did not know when I "saw" the
older men and women playing board games. A year later, the owner of the home
told me he did not "like" that room and did not want to use it, but he would not
tell me why.
Did
the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively
describe your experience?
