I
was really struggling with the sudden loss of my grandma Bradley. She was
healthier than I was and even taught water aerobics at the age of 79. She went
into V-fib on her husband's (my grandpas) birthday, went into a coma for a week,
and then passed away peacefully off all machines and surrounded by her family at
the hospital.
I
was getting ready to go to work one afternoon (probably around noon time) and
walked into the side-room in my bedroom when I was hit with the smell of my
grandma. Confused I walked out into my main room and smelt nothing, walked back
into my side room and there it was again. I took a big sniff, smiled and said
out loud "Hi grandma, I love you and miss you and I hope you're okay". I took
another big sniff of the air and then had to leave for work. I haven't smelt her
since. After work I came home to investigate to see if I maybe had some of her
things in the room that could've caused it or any other explanation but came up
empty.
I
know that it was my grandma telling me that she was okay from the beyond, and it
gave me such peace that I was able to start to move on with her passing. She
still visits me from time-to-time in my dreams, and I still talk to her all the
time.
Did you ONLY sense an awareness of presence of the
deceased without actually seeing, hearing, feeling or smelling them?
No
Did you hear the deceased or hear something
associated with the deceased?
No
Did you feel a touch or experience any physical
contact from the deceased?
No
Did you see the deceased?
No
Did you smell a distinct smell, scent, fragrance
or odor associated with the deceased?
Yes
What smell, scent, fragrance or odor did you smell?
I smelled her and her perfume. I can't explain the scent profile,
and I don't know what perfume it was, but I've known that scent my whole life.
Was the smell, scent, fragrance or odor familiar?
It was the same scent I've been smelling my whole life - my grandma / her
perfume.
Was anything communicated by the smell?
I believe she came to tell me that she was okay and
that she loved me.
Is there any possibility that the smell, scent, fragrance or odor was
from any other source present in the surroundings at the time of your
experience?
No, I searched around
for an explanation - even talking to my family who lived in the house to see if
they had any ideas on what it could be and nothing.
How long did the experience last?
1-2 minutes
Was the beginning and end of the experience gradual or more sudden?
Sudden for the beginning, for the end I had to leave the room so idk.
Could you sense the emotions or mood of the deceased?
Uncertain
I felt very calm and loved, just how my grandma made me feel in life.
Did the deceased give you information you did not previously know?
No additional information.
How do you currently view the reality of your experience?
Experience was
definitely real
Please explain why you view the reality of your experience as real or not
real:
I have had multiple experiences throughout my life
where I interacted with a loved one who passed, and so has my mom. Mine and my
mom's experiences have no other explanation other than us communicating with the
other side.
Was the experience dream like in any way?
No
Describe in detail
your feelings/emotions during the experience:
At first I was confused, but then I leaned into the experience and was happy, at
peace and grateful for another moment with my grandma.
Was there any emotional healing in any way following the experience?
Yes
I got the feeling that I could start to move on from the hardcore grief I
was experiencing because I knew my grandma was still with me and that she was
okay.
What was the best and worst part of your experience?
The best part was getting to spend another moment with my grandma. The
wasn't a worse part, I just wish I didn't have to go to work so I could've
stayed in her presence longer.
Has your life changed specifically as a result of
your experience?
Uncertain
Describe:
It hasn't changed my day-to-day life necessarily, but it helped me with my
grief. I still talk to my loved ones and ask for advice, tell them about my
life, etc.
