It was not a personal experience but I feel it’s worth sharing. I have not
mentioned this to anyone except a couple of people because I feel people won’t
believe me. I was a single mother of a beautiful, musically gifted young man for
a long time. We were very close as we had no other close relatives in Australia
where we lived. Even after I remarried, my son and I remained best friends.
Unfortunately he was diagnosed with narcolepsy and depression. Coexistence of
the two conditions is rare, I was told and difficult to treat due to completely
conflicting treatments
His life was a living hell and we were struggling everyday with medical
appointments, hopelessness, despair and sleeplessness. I was emotionally fraught
and sleep deprived too with worry and helplessness of watching my beloved son’s
distress and being unable to help. Anyway, on the afternoon of 12th November
2013,we had a major row which I have not forgiven myself for since. 20 minutes
later my son yelled out from his room downstairs ' mum you were right. I have
been very selfish ' I asked him to come upstairs so we could talk and he said
that he needed some time to himself. Thinking nothing of it, I said ok sure but
I am here whenever you needn’t to talk. That’s the last time I heard from him.
We found him 4 hours later in our swimming pool.
However in the time I discovered he was missing and during the time I was
rushing from room to room desperately and increasingly concerned- calling out
his name, I suddenly heard his voice, very clearly say 'Yes ...' a very tired
voice that sounded like he hadn’t been woken from deep sleep., I ran frantically
towards the sound .... but there was nothing more. There was no one else at the
time at home. I heard his voice coming from his room which overlooked the
swimming pool.
Timelines - we had the row at 2:45 pm. At 3 pm my son said his goodbye (though I
didn’t know that at the time), 4:30 pm I started to look for him. 8 pm was when
we found him in the pool. I heard his voice exactly at 5:15pm, he would haven
been technically dead for at least an hour by then
