I
was 16 years old when my paternal grandmother passed away. I had attended her
funeral that day. In all of my short life, I had probably visited her once a
month, so I barely knew her. . My father did not go to the town he grew up in
very often, so I really didn’t have a relationship with her at all. I remembered
her as being very kind and caring, but never had the opportunity to get close.
That night, around 2 am, I suddenly woke up, and sat up in bed. I don’t recall
what woke me. Then I heard it. The sound coming down the hallway was the noise
the someone in soft slippers makes as they shuffle along on a carpeted floor. I
thought that it was my mother, so I said 'Mama, is that you?'. No answer. The
shuffling sound slowed and it was then that she came into full view standing at
my bedroom door. I couldn’t believe it. My heart jumped into my throat. I was
terrified and I don’t think I had ever dove under the covers so fast! She was
dressed as she always was when I visited her, a snap front house dress that was
popular among older women, an apron, and those satin slippers. She looked very
close to how she did while alive, except that she was a bit transparent, and
also had a slight glow. I was so scared. Every few minutes I would raise the
covers to see if she was still there. She would still be standing in the same
place, hands clasped in front of her with a sweet expression on her face. I
could hear her telling me it was ok and that she was just looking around. I have
no idea why she wanted to 'look around'. I remember that it was summertime, and
I was sweating with my head under the covers, praying that she’d be gone the
next time I looked. Finally, after 15 minutes, she left. I haven’t seen her
since. I still don’t know why she came to me, and to this day I feel guilt for
not communicating with her. But after all, I was a kid.
