About 10 days after my mother passed, I was shopping in the grocery store. It was a Sunday morning and the store was pretty much empty. Being that i am a single mother, sometimes things can be tight financially for me. When my mother was alive, she used to take me grocery shopping all the time.
I was
walking down the canned foods aisle. There was no one else in the aisle with me
either when I first entered the aisle or as I walked down it. I got about
3/4ths the way down the aisle and the smell of my mother hit me right between
the eyes. It was unexpected like walking into a cloud and "in my face" is the
only way I know how to describe it. My mother had a very particular smell- not
unpleasant-but just an "old lady" smell. It was NOT a smell associated with
medicines, perfume, hairsprays, or anything else like that. I smelled it for
about 3 seconds and then it was gone. My first thought was "MY mother is here!"
or "It's my mom!" then my next thought was, "I must be going crazy and there
has to be a logical explanation for this. So I stuck my head in all the
surrounding shelves and sniffed trying to see if there was a smell that was
similar and there was not. The next thing I did was to look down the closest
aisles to see if someone was standing in a nearby aisle that it could be --
there was no one in those aisles. So thinking that I must surely be losing my
mind, I decided to walk around the store for 20 minutes and come back to that
spot and if I smelled the smell again I would know that it had a physical cause.
So that is what I did. When I came back to the spot 20 mins later, the smell
was still not present.
