My
uncle's funeral was held in the city where he and his wife had lived during
their retirement for the last 7 years. The burial was 40 miles away in the
cemetery that was literally within eyesight of the home and property they had
lived and farmed for half a century. Since we live in a rural community there
was a dinner held after the burial service. This dinner was at the local VFW
post. We all had a nice time visiting and reminiscing about Uncle Clem. After a
long day my wife and I were able to come home sometime in the early evening. We
had just entered our home and my wife went into her bedroom to change into more
comfortable clothing. She suddenly darted back out of the bedroom and said,
'Listen!'
She had a small black chest in her hands and when she placed it on the side
table by the couch it began to play a tinkly little melody. It only played for
around 10 seconds and then stopped. This little chest was the jewelry box that
had sat on the bureau next to her bed. She had owned this box for years. It had
started to make music when she was changing her clothes. It was black lacquered
with a Japanese style painting, and had a music box in it. I didn't know that it
was a music box and my wife never had never used it as one, in fact I don't
think she'd ever opened it at all. We had been married 21 years at that point
and there had never been music from the box before. I think the total playing
time was around 15-20 seconds. We've now been married 30 years and the box has
been silent since that evening. Perhaps this doesn't meet the criteria as a
contact, but Uncle Clem loved to go dancing with my aunt. We think he was just
letting us know that he was OK and on his way out for the evening's festivities.
I look at the box occasionally, but I never wind it...just because.
