Experience description:

It was before I ever heard of NDE.  My grandmother had just died and I was devastated.  I wanted to be with her.  I walked down a tunnel with a bright light shining at the end of the tunnel.  My grandmother was there, she told me it was not my time, I must go back, I could not stay.  I woke up, there appeared to be an apparition in the corner of the room looking over me.  I felt comforted.

Any associated medications or substances with the potential to affect the experience?     No

Was the kind of experience difficult to express in words? No

At the time of this experience, was there an associated life threatening event?          No

What was your level of consciousness and alertness during the experience?           I was in the tunnel completely awake and aware.

Was the experience dream like in any way?   It was not like dreams.  When I wake up from a dream I know I was dreaming.  This was real.

Did you experience a separation of your consciousness from your body?     Uncertain

I may have left my body since it was very real that I was walking down the tunnel.

What emotions did you feel during the experience?            I felt love and wanted to stay with my grandmother.

Did you hear any unusual sounds or noises?           No

LOCATION DESCRIPTION:  Did you recognize any familiar locations or any locations from familiar religious teachings or encounter any locations inhabited by incredible or amazing creatures?    No

Did you see a light?           Yes

There was a bright light at the end of the tunnel, but it also seemed to envelope me.

Did you meet or see any other beings?           Yes

My grandmother was at the end of the tunnel.  I felt love and she told me to go back, it was not my time, I could not stay with her.

Did you experiment while out of the body or in another, altered state? No

Did you observe or hear anything regarding people or events during your experience that could be verified later? No

Did you notice how your 5 senses were working, and if so, how were they different?          Uncertain

I think I felt more (like feeling the light maybe rather than seeing it) and may have communicated directly mind to mind rather than speaking.

Did you have any sense of altered space or time?   Yes

I felt like I was floating, but I cannot really describe this.

Did you have a sense of knowing, special knowledge, universal order and/or purpose?    Yes

Yes, knowing that my grandmother would be waiting for me in the tunnel when I die.

Did you reach a boundary or limiting physical structure?             Yes

Where my grandmother was standing, at the end of the tunnel, maybe there was a door or we would have just crossed the light, she would not let me go further along.

Did you become aware of future events?       No

Were you involved in or aware of a decision regarding your return to the body?       Yes

My grandmother specifically told me it was not my time, I had to go back.

Did you have any psychic, paranormal or other special gifts following the experience that you did not have prior to the experience?         No

Did you have any changes of attitudes or beliefs following the experience?   Uncertain

More interested in knowing if this was real. More interest in Buddhism. As I said, I had never heard of NDE until after this experience and it does give me some comfort and hope that I will continue to exist after my body dies.

How has the experience affected your relationships? Daily life? Religious practices? Career choices?       I don't think it has.  It has just always been in the back of my mind and I guess I have been more interested as I get older in understanding what happened.

Has your life changed specifically as a result of your experience?         No

Have you shared this experience with others?         Yes

Only a couple of times, but no real reaction of substance.

What emotions did you experience following your experience?  I felt love.

What was the best and worst part of your experience?      Feeling love, seeing my grandmother, then having to leave her.

Is there anything else you would like to add concerning the experience?        I find it odd that I was not physically in any danger of dieing that I know of but I wanted to be with her.

Following the experience, have you had any other events in your life, medications or substances which reproduced any part of the experience?         No

Did the questions asked and information you provided accurately and comprehensively describe your experience?               Yes
